This week, in anticipation of the holidays I wanted to share a song I wrote a few years back when I was struggling. This time of year can be particularly hard on many of us. The days are darker, the nights are longer, and there’s an expectation to feel joyous and full of gratitude. All this can be a recipe for a mental health crisis.

I wrote the song “Me & You” because I was looking for some hope during a time of deep sadness for me as I was trying to let go of a relationship that I had been in for the entirety of my adult life. I’ve always been a sucker for the bittersweet holiday song where it’s not all candy canes and jingle bells.

I hope you enjoy this little offering and if you’re feeling alone, please remember that you’re not. We’re all connected. Me and You.

Thank you for reading Catch & Release. This post is public so feel free to share it.

Me & You (Lyrics)

I could give you a ride to the airport or subway station
So you could beat the crowd rushing home for the holiday
Or you could stay with me and order another coffee
And pretend it was me you were hoping would take you home

But I'm just wishful thinking
I’m drinking here alone
Your bag’s already packed
You won’t be coming back
To me and you

People at work think I’m such a funny person
I’m just a cynical smartass in a really good disguise
I don’t hang out after work but they don’t think I’m a jerk
Just a man with someone worth getting home to see

But I’m just out here walking
And talking to myself
Because you won’t take my calls
You took the pictures off the walls
Of me and you

Bridge

Daylight slips behind, the cold city skyline
And as I wait for the last train home it starts to snow

In the streetlamp’s glow on the corner where I live
The kids skid around on the light dusting of snow
A woman fumbles with some bags and drops the one she drags
When she looks up into the light I see your face

I call down from the window
You say you didn’t know if I’d take you back
I take the stairs three at a time
And then I’m holding your hands in mine
And it’s me and you
