Holy f#%*! What a wild twist! This particular trauma and the complexity of its perpetrator is horrifying. It sounds like her kidnapper really believes his mission is benevolent…and those are the scariest kind of villains.

And this metaphor…jesus, so good.

“When something horrific happens to you as a child, if you remember it, it’s different from any normal memory. It has a weight, an impenetrable density to it, like typewritten lines on a page that have been typed over so many times that any hope of reading what was originally struck into the page is lost.”

Yay! It landed. 🛬

Thank you, Kimberly. I take it as a win when I can illicit a censored curse from you after you’ve read a chapter.

Oof, super chilling. And I second all of Kimberly’s thoughts. It does seem like he believes in the truth and necessity of his mission, which of course makes him all the more dangerous. Bless her. I can only imagine how this was for K & L…

I love how you’re on a first initial basis with these characters now. That makes me happy.

Poor Marabelle. That line Kimberly pointed out, about childhood trauma, that was so well written and insightful. And this line was just satisfying as hell: “He was a small man in a large man’s body.”

Ben Wakeman's avatar

Yeah, I think there are lot’s of men who fit this description. Thank you, Stephanie!

Oh my goodness, Ben. You hinted at this in the last chapter. And still, it was heartbreaking. And written so beautifully. As with all your characters, you created a brilliant one?’, in this case a brilliant villain.

And Harmony House!! Can’t wait to hold it in my hands

Thank you, friend! I can’t wait for you to have Harmony House in your hands. It’s been a long time coming. On Daedalia, sorry I didn’t get the link up to Chapter 20 in time this morning, but it’s out there waiting for you. I know 19 left you in a bit of a tight spot.

You are the best!!

Ben you always take a step into the beyond! The beyond being just that bit further than I anticipate! This is turning into an even more intriguing mystery, Fiodor Barkowski has cast a shadow, I'm wondering now just how dark!

Can't wait for the next chapter Ben!

Thank you so much, Susie. I’m so happy this turn has intrigued you. Tomorrow we go deeper down the rabbit hole.

Oh Marabelle. What a twist. I’m so completely enthralled and desperate to read on.

Ben Wakeman's avatar

Thanks, Emily. I appreciate you being here.

Woah! This is chilling! And totally believable, given the high-stakes game her parents were playing, really with no regard for how it might affect Marabelle. Wow. It's a brilliant, well-earned turn that upsets everything -- in the tradition of the best page-turners. (How DO you do it??) I love how this story has edged closer and closer to being a thriller and now, here we are, fully in the thick of it. Whatever will happen next?!

Ben Wakeman's avatar

Thanks so much, Julie. I’m so happy this turn feels earned at this point in the story.

Great chapter, quite chilling. I am intrigued to learn more about Marabelle and how all of this played out for her.

And super excited for the publication of Harmony House! If you need any pre-publication readers for final checks... 🙋🏻‍♀️ I really look forward to seeing it in print!

Hey Robin! I’m so glad you enjoyed the chapter. Thanks for the offer to be an early reader of Harmony House. I’ll keep you in mind. Still making lots of “final” edits. It’s hard to pick up a a draft you haven’t thought about in three years.

Happy to help if you need it! Good luck!

So excited that you’re releasing Harmony House!! Okay, listening and reading this chapter now.

Me too! You were a huge part of helping bring that story to life every week.
